Description

In Egyptian mythology, Serqet (also known as Selket, Selchis, and Selkis among many) is the goddess of healing stings and bites who originally was the deification of the scorpion. She was depicted as either a scorpion or a woman with a scorpion on her head. She was important in Her healing capacity and considered to be a goddess of magic. She was quite frequently viewed as the patroness of the earlier pharaohs because of Her ability to heal venomous bites and stings (hence the "Scorpion Kings"). She is said to have protected individuals from Apep (or the Apophis), the snake-demon of evil. Because venomous bites frequently proved fatal, She was also considered protector of the dead and was
associated with embalming and mummification giving rise to Her ties with the canopic jar containing the intestines, represented by Qebehsenuf, one of the Four sons of Horus. She was associated with the western cardinal point (the west was associated with death and rebirth). Yet, She was closely associated with the breath of life.

Serqet (also Serket, Selket), is invoked for protection against disease, disaster and enemies.

I used my friend :iconaria-selene: as a reference for Serqet ([link]). I thought she fit my personification of the Goddess Serqet
perfectly...elegant, beautiful, sweet yet strong, protective. I thank her so much for being patient with me. It's taken me
forever to finish this piece. I've had some personal setbacks that have prevented me from working on my paintings as much as I'd like, but I eventually get to them.

I really had a rough time with the background on this one. I'm not in to backgrounds anyway. Once the portrait is finished, I get bored. I just didn't know what to put on this one. But I thought an Egyptian tomb with brazier would be nice. I was going to put canopic jars in the painting, but I have reached the point where I think enough is enough. I could add stuff forever and I don't want to take away from the portrait itself.

I also used some free Photoshop fonts I found through a google search to do the hieroglyphs. I was going to paint
actual text from the Book of the Dead...but...alright...I got really bored painting all the little hieroglyphs :P

I don't really ever feel like my paintings do the model justice. Sheralie is so pretty. I need to do a painting that shows
her smiling. She has DIMPLES (I'm so jealous...:D...I always wanted dimples...instead my brother got them :-()
I hope you like this my dear friend
